DANCE RECITAL PORTRAITS

Ron McKinney Photography has been photographing dancers since 2008, and is a leader in dance photography education and community through the organization he and his wife, Beth, runs, Pas de Deux Photo. He has a built a team of photographers and assistants who specialize in dance photography, and specifically, recital portraits.

We photograph the dancers while tethered to a TV screen so we can immediately confirm or not if everything looks good in the image. We are very good at capturing peak moments in leaps and movements.

For your pre-order, you will be sent a link where you have the choice of four small print packages (B1, B2, E1 and E2). If your daughter is in multiple dances, you can let us know which dance to pull an image from. We will decide will of a couple of poses will be used in the print.

The most popular option with dancers in two or more dances is the Online Gallery. This costs $50, but you will receive a coupon code for $50, so when you place your order, that $50 will go toward your order. In the viewing gallery, you’ll have a lot more options for print packages, JPG packages, and a la carte items. The a la carte items include 8x10 memory mates (prints or plaques), metal bagtag, metallic ornament, 10x20-inch montage of five images, 10-inch statuette, acrylic block, button, magnets, keychains, and dog tags.

We also offer special editing effects such as adding a watercolor effect, or texture.

All of those items can only be ordered through the viewing gallery.

We usually get the viewing gallery out within a week of the photoshoot, and then you usually have 4-7 days to place your order. We add some extra time after that initial deadline, but once we have placed our order with the printing company, the prices on the viewing gallery go up to our late pricing. It’s about a 33% increase, so you definitely want to get your order in on time. You would also then have to pay for shipping.

We deliver the products to the studio.

MAKING YOUR INITIAL ORDER

You have six options. The viewing gallery, and then you don’t have to choose anything else until you see your pictures in the viewing gallery; the single JPG option; and then two different print packages, with two variations of each.

PREPARATION FOR THE PHOTO SHOOT

With the little dancers, a teacher is usually there to pose them. But older dancers often have the option of choosing their own poses. We usually do 2 poses per costume, but they can do a third if they really want to. I do bring a posing chart so they can see a number of sample poses for all age and skill groups in each of the usual dance styles. When they step onto our marley, they should be prepared with their poses.

For these types of shoots, dancers should pose in poses or leaps that they have already mastered. If they have never tried a firebird leap for example, this isn’t the time to try it out. But if they do want to do something new, they can work on it on it in the weeks leading up to the shoot, get some guidance from a teacher during class, and I’m sure it will turn out fine.
